How Does Cold Weather Impact Your Hair?

Any woman with hair knows that hot and humid weather makes for frizzy or limp lack luster hair, but what we don’t usually think about is how damaging winter weather can be on your hair. Did you know… cold, dry weather causes breakage, frizz, static, and colored hair loses shine and vibrancy.  Also, high winds make for tangled hair that creates further damage and breakage when you try to comb through it.

OK, we presented the bad news, but don’t worry, we have good news too. We have some some simple and extremely effective winter hair care tips that you can take to protect your hair and keep it looking amazing.

How Can You Protect Your Hair From Cold Weather?

Moisturize your hair

This is one of the best things you can do to protect your hair in the winter, add moisturizer. Use a moisturizing shampoo and leave-in conditioner. A moisturizing shampoo will nourish your hair and preserve some of the natural oils your scalp produces. A leave-in conditioner will add nourishment to your hair.

Get Regular Trims

Getting regular trims will keep your hair looking healthy, full of life, get rid of those split ends. We recommend getting your hair trimmed at minimum every 6 weeks in the winter. Don’t worry, our stylists will make sure your hair isn’t too short. Just tell them you only want to get rid of the dead ends.

Protect your hair from the elements and wear a hat.

It is important to cover your hair during the winter months to shield it from the moisture-robbing dry air, snow, wind, and rain. This is not the time to worry about dreaded hat hair. The elements dry your hair out, making it more prone to breakage.

*Please note: Wool, cotton, and other fabrics can cause breakage as well, so make sure to line your hat with silk or satin to help prevent damage.

Use a silk Pillowcase

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase will help keep that bed head under control. The natural properties of silk, including its smooth surface, can help reduce friction on your hair which often causes damage, like spilt ends.

Keep Travel-Size Hair Products Handy

During the unpredictable months of winter here in Connecticut, you could leave your house looking great and, in a few moments, have it looking like a bird’s nest. Having travel-sized containers of hairspray and smoothing cream or serum with you at all times will help with any winter hair emergency.

Protect Hair From Heat Damage

The winter elements are harsh enough, add a blow dry or hot tool to your hair, and now you have bigger problems. Use a heat-protecting spray every time you blow dry, straighten, or curl your hair with a styling tool. And… give your hair a break from heat styling when having a home day.

Use a Color-Restoring Shampoo/Conditioner

Color restoring shampoo and conditioners work by placing a small amount of color to the hair each time you wash it. There are color-restoring shampoos nearly every hair color.

Get a box of unscented dryer sheets

They’re not just for keeping static out of your clothes, they have the same effect on your hair! Grab a sheet, rub it gently from the roots to the ends of your hair (after brushing), and voilà static-free hair. This isn’t a permanent solution, static can build up throughout the day, keep a few of these dryer sheets in your wallet or purse to use them as needed.
