Colored Hair Tips: Caring for Fashion Colored Hair

This is part two of a two-part article series on caring for colored hair. Part one talks about caring for traditionally colored hair, and part two discusses caring for fashion colored hair.

Are you one of the many people that love to experiment with different colored hair? Or are you thinking about taking the leap to put some color in your life? Fashion colored hair has been popular since the 90’s and with so many colors to choose from, it can be a fun endeavor. But once you decide to add a vivid color or colors to your hair, you’ll need to adopt a care routine to keep the color vibrant and longer lasting. Here are some tips on caring for your fashion colored hair:

1.  Avoid Over Washing Your Hair

We recommend not shampooing your fashion colored hair more than three times a week. Fashion colors are semi-permanent so with each shampoo, the color fades a bit. You can use dry shampoo in between washes. Dry shampoo will not affect the color and can help keep your fashion color vibrant.

2. Wash with Cold Water

If you can stand it, wash your hair with cold water, which keeps the cuticles on the hair shaft closed whereas warmer water opens them up. This is important because the more open the cuticles are, the more fading will occur.

3. Use Color-Safe Hair Products

In many cases, sulfates—which include Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate—are added to shampoo to create a foaming lather. However, these synthetic chemicals have also been found to strip hair of its color. After dyeing your hair, a vibrant shade like fuchsia or chartreuse, look for a sulfate-free option when it comes time to wash your locks. We can also suggest products to use after your color treatment.

4. Condition Well after Washing

Healthy hair is always in style, so make sure to condition it thoroughly after each wash. If your hair feels dry and brittle, a deep conditioning can bring out its softness and shine again. Heat can damage your colored locks, so avoid blow-drying or using a curling iron whenever possible.

5. Avoid Chlorine

After coloring your hair, it's best to avoid chlorine, which can react with the hair dye and cause your hair to break more easily. If you do visit a chlorine-infused pool, be sure to rinse your hair out thoroughly with fresh water before washing.
