DevaCut or Traditional Haircut

Anyone with naturally curly hair has likely experienced a disastrous haircut. The cut could have looked choppy, frizzy, or had a heavy look. But then came a cut designed specifically for wavy to tightly coiled hair called the DevaCut. Created by the Devachan Salon in New York, the DevaCut is a specialized hair cutting technique that makes each curl look its best. So, for curly-haired people, this cut is a dream come true. But when you've always had a traditional haircut for your curly hair, how do you decide whether a DevaCut is right for you? Let’s take a closer look at each type of haircut.

DevaCut

The DevaCut is a unique haircut where the stylist cuts your hair while it's dry. Because curly hair dries differently, this haircut method is effective in accounting for your curls’ spring factor and how they naturally fall. The stylist can now sculpt your hair to enhance its natural curl pattern.

In contrast to a traditional cut, which may leave your hair choppy or uneven, the DevaCut tames every curl to create a beautiful shape for your hair.

Traditional Haircut

Of course, people with curly hair can receive a traditional cut such as a layered style, but the stylist needs to be skilled in haircutting methods for curly hair. For example, with a traditional cut, the angle of the shears and other special techniques are key factors in having a traditional cut work for a curly-haired person.

Also, a traditional haircut generally involves cutting the hair while it’s wet. The stylist will use a brush or hands to pull the hair taut, and then make cuts accordingly. This method works well enough for straight or only slightly wavy hair, but it can cause problems when applied to curly hair. Most notably, it can result in your curls being cut too short or too unevenly. It can also cause your curls to frizz out more than they would otherwise.

Caring for Curly Hair

Whether choosing a DevaCut or traditional cut, we recommend specific care for curly hair. With curly hair, it’s best to shampoo and condition your hair. However, consider shampooing less often. Curly hair is prone to dryness, so washing less keeps it healthy and moisturized. We recommend shampooing once a week or a few times a week at most. You can also nourish your curly hair with a deep conditioner to maintain its shine and soften the curls.

You’ll want to minimize heat on your curly hair by not using a flat or curling iron which can damage hair. As far as products, there are many made specifically for curly hair. Our curly hair expert, Shontai, uses SuperCream by DevaCurl. She sections her hair, distributes the cream evenly, and then scrunches her hair and lets it air dry. She also recommends using silk pillowcases to minimize hair breakage while sleeping.

Finally, detangling curly hair with your fingers is always best as it won’t break as much with a comb or brush. Have your hair shaped by your stylist every 3 to 4 months to keep your curls looking their best.
