Everything You Need to Know About Keratin Treatments

Are you tired of frizzy hair that won't stay put? Or hair that is challenging to style, especially when rushing out the door? If so, then a Keratin treatment, a form of straightening your hair, might be just what you need. A Keratin treatment lasts for up to 6 months with the right care. Since it's not permanent, you will need to redo it to keep your hair looking smooth and straight.

If you're thinking about getting a Keratin treatment, below we cover how it works, the benefits, safety, and maintenance.

How it Works

Keratin treatment is a type of hair treatment that uses Keratin, a fibrous protein naturally found in the hair and nails. The treatment works by infusing hair with a Keratin protein solution, helping to repair damage and breakage, leaving your hair smooth and shiny.

At the salon, the hair stylist will wash your hair and then apply the Keratin. The treatment is then sealed with heat that is applied with a blow-dryer and flat iron.

Benefits for Hair

Offering a range of benefits for your hair, the Keratin treatment’s main benefit is hair that looks smooth and is frizz-free with an intense shine. So, if you have ever longed for hair that is straight and easy to maintain, consider a Keratin treatment. Here are some other benefits:

Cuts blow-drying in half – Imagine cutting your blow-drying in half! For women with busy lifestyles who want less maintenance with their hair, a Keratin treatment may be the answer.

Works on all hair types – Whether your hair is curly, wavy, straight, thick, or thin, the Keratin treatment works. The treatment also works for hair that is colored and of different lengths.

More manageable hair – Since your hair is straightened and has a sleek finish, it’s more manageable and has a healthier appearance. In rainy or humid weather, you don’t have to worry about your hair frizzing up because the Keratin acts as a protective shield against the elements.

Is a Keratin Treatment safe?

If the Keratin treatment is performed by a professional at a reputable salon, it is perfectly safe. At Jessica’s Color Room we use a treatment that has minimal chemicals. However, we do not recommend the treatment for pregnant women.

Hair Maintenance

Once you receive the Keratin treatment, you’ll want to wait for 3 to 4 days before washing your hair. To help make the Keratin treatment last, it’s recommended you wash your hair no more than 2 to 3 times a week. You’ll also want to use a shampoo and conditioner that does not contain sodium chloride and sulfates, which can strip the treatment.

Since a Keratin treatment is not a one-time application, you’ll need to return to the salon every few months. If you notice your hair going back to its original state, then you know it’s time for another treatment.

How Much Does it Cost?

A Keratin treatment at Jessica’s Color Room is $350. We estimate that you’ll be at our salon for about 2 hours.

Wrap Up

Keratin treatments are a fantastic way to achieve smooth, healthy-looking hair. However, certain cons do exist such as waiting to wash your hair (2 to 3 times a week at most) and avoiding swimming because of the chlorination or salt water. So, before deciding to get a Keratin treatment, be sure to do your research and consult with a professional to ensure that it's the right choice for you.
