Q&A with Hairstylist Ashley of Jessica's Color Room

Ashley has been a hairstylist with Jessica’s Color Room for over 12 years. She is one of our most innovative artists and has a wealth of knowledge that helps her to excel with total hair transformations! Ashley’s abilities make her a great role model for new stylists. You’ll often see her working to build the team’s expertise. Ashley listens intently to her guest’s hair goals and specializes in women’s and men’s haircuts.

1. How did you get started in the hairstyling industry?

My mom is a stylist, so she encouraged me to attend a technical high school, so I went to Vinal Tech.

2. What made you choose hairdressing as a career?

I was leaning toward electromechanical as a career for a while. However, my passion was more for hair. I did well in hairdressing, but I tried everything because Vinal Tech is an exploratory school. Also, my mom pointed out that I would have a license in hairdressing when I graduated from high school, which was a good goal.

3. What are you known for at the salon?

I’d probably say the more challenging hairstyles like big transformations. I am not afraid to use all my texturizing tools and give pixie, razor, and clipper cuts. If someone wants to shave off three-fourths of their hair, I’m happy to do that for them. I like to consult with them first, though, where we set the hair goal, and then I give a realistic expectation on how it can be achieved.

4. What’s your proudest professional accomplishment?

I find joy in total hair transformations and seeing the result. What I am most proud of, however, are my clients who come to the salon with broken and stressed hair or whose hair goal has been unachievable, and then I help them achieve what they want. Sometimes it takes time, like with people who want healthy hair. Ultimately, they are so proud of their hair, making me feel proud that I helped them get there.

5. How do you build relationships with your clients?

I have thorough consultations with my clients. Part of my consults includes talking about their everyday routines at home and, realistically, how often they are styling their hair, how often they come back to the salon, and what they can afford. Talking about these things, allows me to better understand their lives and where their hair goals lie, so it builds good relationships.

6. What is your favorite hair trend right now?

I’ve noticed that many people are on a healthy hair journey. They are growing out their hair. They are going for the blunter haircut and experimenting with extensions to achieve fullness. They are also using conditioning masks and strengthening Olaplex treatments. It’s exciting to see the strength and health of their hair come first.

7. What inspires you most about working for Jessica’s Color Room?

It’s the team. We can all agree that working all day with different women is not always easy, but it always has been for me at this salon. I’ve been here for over 12 years, and how the girls support each other and how they truly want each other to succeed makes a big difference in coming to work every day. It makes me happy.

8. What do you like to do in your free time?

I have two small children, so I enjoy spending time with my family and trying to get some fresh air outside. I also enjoy gardening, and just like with hair; I get to watch it grow into something beautiful, which is rewarding and brings joy to me and others.
